Week 13 Deep Outs

13 weeks are behind us, and only 4 weeks remain. It’s time for a good overview of what the playoff picture looks like, and make some non-bold predictions on who could be facing each other in the first round.

AFC Playoff Picture:

Teams eliminated from contention, either mathematically, or by my vast knowledge of football: Buffalo, Cleveland, Oakland, and KC

Locked into division title: Indy and Cincinnati.

Most likely to win division titles, but still fighting: San Diego, New England

Front runners for Wildcard spots: Denver, Jacksonville

Still in the Mix, but need some help: Miami, NYJ, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, and Houston

My guess on the playoffs look like this: Indy will have a bye and home field throughout. Cincinnati and San Diego battling it out for the other bye. The loser of that battle will play Jacksonville in the first round, and New England will be hosting Denver.

Byes: Indy, SD

First Round matchups: Cincinnati Vs. Jacksonville, New England Vs. Denver

NFC Playoff Picture:

Teams eliminated from contention, either mathematically, or by my vast knowledge of football: Washington, Chicago, Detroit, Carolina, Tampa Bay, San Fran, Seattle, and St. Louis

Locked into division title: New Orleans, Minnesota, Arizona

Divisional titles up for grabs: Dallas/Philly,

Front runners for Wildcard spots: Dallas/Philly, Green Bay

Still in the Mix, but need some help: NYG, Atlanta

My guess on the playoffs look like this: New Orleans will clinch a bye and home field throughout. Minnesota is given the 2nd spot, and a bye. Arizona and the winner of the NFC East are going to be battling it out for the #3 and #4 ranking. We might see a 3rd game between Philly and Dallas before this is all sorted out!

Byes: N.O, Minnesota

First Round Matchups: Arizona Vs. Green Bay, Dallas Vs. Philly.

Statline of the Week:

Frank Gore - 9 carries for 25 yards rushing.

I still think that running F. Gore just 9 times in a game is downright deplorable. I have never seen an RB mishandled worse than Frank Gore has been handled these past 3 weeks (7, 16, and 9 carries respectively)

Pet Peeve of the Week:

Yo

You know that little animated robot Fox has while they are showing you who has sponsored the game? I hate it and I want it to die a painful death. Hell, I want everyone involved with the creation, and development of it to be put out of their misery.

What else happened on Sunday?

- Chad Henne with his first career 300+ yard game, and he did it in style as they beat the Patriots!

- I am guessing that if the patriots want to win, they have to get the ball to Randy Moss more than twice. Especially in the last 50 minutes of game time (his last catch was with 5:42 left in the first Q)

- I love seeing a slow, white possession receiver like Wes Welker breaking a 58 yard catch....but get caught while trying to run it out! Too Funny!

- One of my favourite plays of the day was Devin Thomas catching a 10 yard pass, only to get hammered by a questionable Helmet-to-Helmet hit by Sharper. The cool part was Thomas jumping right up, and giving the ref the ‘I’m ok Thumbs Up’. Kind of funny to see.

- Just before half, the Saints were pushing to tie the game at 17 when we saw the WOW play of the day:

o (:39) (Shotgun) D.Brees pass short middle intended for J.Shockey INTERCEPTED by K.Moore at WAS 30. K.Moore to WAS 44 for 14 yards (R.Meachem). FUMBLES (R.Meachem), RECOVERED by NO-R.Meachem at WAS 44. R.Meachem for 44 yards, TOUCHDOWN. Play Challenged by Replay Assistant and Upheld

- Maybe we were a little wrong about this Raiders team...They are pretty competitive without J. Russell and DHB. I don’t think Gradkowski is the answer, but marching into Pittsburgh, and beating a desperate Steelers team is pretty impressive.

- Louis Murphy > DHB. I love, LOVE the stutter step on his first of two 4th quarter TDs to beat the Steelers.

- 33 for 199, 2TDs. That is the rushing stats for the two main ball carriers for the Broncos. Very impressive numbers for the Buckhalter/Moreno combo.

- There are times that Todd Haley impresses me, and times where he makes me shake my head. Yelling at Bobby wade on the side line was a ‘shake-my-head’ moment.

- It took until week 13, but Matt Shaub finally got hurt. I know he made it back into the game, but it is still news worthy to point out that he got hurt.

- Good job by the Texans defence to keep MJD in check. It was not keeping N. Hughes and E. Wilford in check that cost them the game.

- The Bubble finally burst for the Titans. The Colts seemed to be boom or bust at the start of the game. Their first half drives looked like this:

o 5 plays, 75 yards, TD
o 3-and-out
o 10 plays, 77 yards, TD
o 3-and-out
o 9 plays, 42 yards, TD.

- The reason the Colts won: Chris Johnson’s longest run was 11 yards.

- Ced Benson returned to action with 36 carries on Sunday. It resulted in just over 3 yards a carry, 110 yards.

- Between riding a Segway into the game, and throwing a Poncho and sombrero on after scoring a TD, 85 has entrenched himself as the most entertaining player in professional football OFF OF THE FIELD.

- In the crap-tastic game of the week, Jay Cutler and Kyle Boller combined to be 25 for 49 for 256 yards 1TD and 1INT. Such QBs named Gradkowski, Quinn, Henne and A. Smith had better days on their own. Pretty happy that I didn’t spend money on tickets for this game.

- The good news is that Josh Freeman passed for 321 yards. The bad news is that he added 5 interceptions, including 3 straight possessions in the red zone in the 2nd half, and a 4th on the Carolina 24 yard line to end the game.

- Michael Vick made his triumphant return to Atlanta. As he entered the stadium, there was a 50-50 split on cheers and jeers. When he ran in his first TD since October of 2006, there were very few boos to be heard.

- The Falcons without M. Turner: 22 for 61 yards rushing. Not so good.

- Is Brady Quinn really becoming a real QB? Maybe the Browns coach next year will be able to use him properly. Here is an idea...Charlie Weis? Hell, he did ok with Quinn at Notre Dame

- I know he hurt himself in practice, but running just 5 times with Justin Forsett should be grounds for a firing Jim Mora Jr. RIGHT NOW! Time and time again he has proven to be the best offensive threat on the Seahawks. Now USE HIM!

- I still think that running F. Gore just 9 times in a game is downright deplorable. I have never seen an RB mishandled worse than Frank Gore has been handled these past 3 weeks (7, 16, and 9 carries respectively)

- It’s kind of nice to see Tony Romo’s 392 yard, 3TD game go to waste. He’s trying his best to break this ‘Loser-In-December’ label, but his team is letting him down. You know what they say, Tony, The first one is always the hardest! ...And it only took him until week 13 to discover that he had one of the best TEs in the game at his disposal. Witten caught 14 passes for 156 yards.

- 2nd week in a row I have seen a TE rush the ball on an end around. Last week is was Delanie Walker for the 49ers getting a carry for 11 yards. This week it was Kevin Boss racking up 16 yards on his carry. Seems effective, I guess, but should these guys really be going around the end?

- You know it’s not your day when you have one of the best RBs in the game, and your leading rusher is a WR. Percy Harvin had 22 yards on the day. The man they call ‘All-Day’ had just 19 yards on 13 carries.

- I guess Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin were happy to have Kurt Warner back! The best receiving duo in the game combined for 15 catches, amount 251 yards and 3 TDs in the process.
